The Rangers continue their four game homestead versus the Flyers tonight. Philly comes in tied with New York with 50 points but having played one more contest. The Flyers have won three straight and are 5-3-2 in their last 10, while New York looks to notch a point in their 10th straight game. After tonight's game, the Rangers are off until Sunday when they face the Avalanche.

Rangers lines vs. Philly:
Panarin-Trocheck-Lafrenière
Cuylle-Zibanejad-Smith
Kreider-Chytil-Kaliyev
Edström-Carrick-Rempe

Lindgren-Fox
Miller-Borgen
Vaakanainen-Schneider

Shesterkin
Quick

Scratches: Vesey, Jones, Brodzinski

While the Rangers have worked their way back into playoff contention, much of the chatter remains on a possible JT Miller deal. The Province reported today that it seems to be Rangers or bust. If Vancouver continues to slide, that could increase the likelihood of a deal and possible willingness of the team to attach a sweeter, the latter suggested in the column.

This is all background noise right now. The focus, rightfully, has been on the play on ice and not on trade speculation or the memo. It is bubbling beneath the surface, but the better New York plays and points they rack up, the more the ancillary components will continue to be somewhat of a non-factor.

Driving this rise in the standings has been improved play defensively. This started with a return to the 1-3-1 neutral zone system plus an increased focus in their own zone. Will Borgen and Urho Vaakanainen have each uplifted the play of their defensivepartner whlle taking care of business in the neutral and own zone. Couple this with a return to form of the top-six and a fourth line making a difference coupled with the rise of Igor and you have the recipe for success.
