The San Jose Sharks have successfully freed up a little bit of salary cap breathing room with a trade that's sent Justin Braun to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for a second-round pick in this year's draft (41st overall) and third-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft.

The 32-year-old Braun, who has just one year left on his $3.8 million per year contract, comes to Philadelphia after a 2018-19 season that featured two goals and 16 points in 78 games. Known as a defense-first defenseman, the right-shot Braun also put up 121 hits and 120 blocked shots last year while averaging 20:18 of time on ice per contest.

The 6-foot-2 defender has spent his entire NHL career with the Sharks, setting career-highs in goals (five), assists (28), and points (33) in 81 games for the Sharks in 2017-18.

It's believed that the Sharks got out from under Braun's $3.8 million cap hit in an effort to successfully re-sign captain and pending unrestricted free agent Joe Pavelski.
