As you know, the Canadiens will only be speaking in the 15th spot come Friday night which means that it's more than possible that they do not get who would have been their first choice. Before it was my turn to pick, here's what was taken off the board:

1. New Jersey Devils - Jack Hughes
2. New York Rangers - Kappo Kakko
3. Chicago Blackhawks - Bowen Byram
4. Colorado Avalanche (from Ottawa Senators) - traded pick to Buffalo, who selected Alex Turcotte
5. Los Angeles Kings - Cole Caufield
6. Detroit Red Wings - Vasili Podkolzin
7. Buffalo Sabres - traded to Colorado, optimus-reim to pick, traded to New York, who selects Trevor Zegras
8. Edmonton Oilers - select Dylan Cozens
9. Anaheim Ducks - pick traded to Florida and the Panthers select Kirby Dach
10. Vancouver Canucks - trades the pick to Colorado, who selects Matthew Boldy
11. Philadelphia Flyers - Philip Broberg
12. Minnesota Wild - select Philip Tomasino
13. Florida Panthers - traded pick to Anaheim, who select Peyton Krebs.
14. Arizona Coyotes - select Victor Soderstrom

With the 15th overall pick, the Montreal Canadiens are proud to select, from the USA National Team Development Program, Cam York

Rationale for the selection:

While the Habs had a lot of issues down the middle and used last year's draft to fill up on prospect, now the team's main need is some help on the left side of the blue line. The Habs have got some great D-men on the right side with Shea Weber and Jeff Petry but they could use some help in the top 4. It would be great to address this need fast than by waiting for a draft pick to be ready but historically, the Habs have struggled to sign free agents and now seem intent on building through the draft.

Arguably the best offensive defenseman available in this draft, York has been described as a mobile and calm defender with tremendous skating abilities. Since both P.K. Subban and Mikhail Sergachev were traded, a first rate offensive puck moving d-man is something the Tricolore has needed badly and since York has a high hockey IQ and great decision making, he could very well fit the bill. Furthermore, he can handle power play duties and has been known to pick apart a team from the blue line.

Finally, at the last U18 World Junior Championship, his stats are the amongst the best ever gathered by a D-man in a single tournament with 11 points in 7 games. York is committed to playing hockey with the University of Michigan this season but we're confident that he will be worth the wait.

I'll admit that I had my eye on Philip Broberg but Philly beat me to it! So for me it was between Thomas Harley and Cam York. Who would you have selected if you had been making the Habs selection in the mock draft?
