Mark Giordano made history at the NHL Awards on Wednesday night, becoming the first ever Calgary Flames player to take home the Norris Trophy.
Giordano beat out Brent Burns and Victor Hedman for the honor in what was a landslide victory.
Of the 171 top-5 votes Giordano received from members of the PHWA, 165 were 1st place. For perspective of how insane that is, Burns and Hedman combined for three 1st place votes. Three.
Giordano blew away the competition and, in my opinion, rightfully so.
He recorded 17 goals and 74 points while playing a ton of minutes in all situations for the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference. You could argue he was the team's best, and most consistent, player throughout the year.
Giordano also posted better on-ice numbers and rate stats across the board.
What makes Giordano's dominance even more impressive, especially relative to Burns and Hedman, is that he played tougher minutes. Giordano spent more time against elite competition than either player, and less against soft competition ("gritensity"),
according to PuckIQ.
Simply put, Giordano garnered better results despite taking on tougher assignments. He was full marks for a runaway victory and it's nice to see the voters felt the same way.
