The Pick is in!

Everyone knew who would go first and who would go second but from the 3rd pick, things became more unpredictable...The Hawks who were thought to be high on Alex Turcotte turned to Dach, Stevie Y made people gasp by selecting Moritz Seider at number 6, the Oilers finally saw sense and drafted a defenseman, Vasili Podkolzin who was ranked as the 2nd best European skater had to wait until Vancouver spoke at rank number 10 to finally hear his name...

Finally, after nearly two hours of picks, the Canadiens got to go on stage and announce their first pick. I genuinely thought that our Habs would be adding Cam York tonight but since the Flyers picked him at 14, it was not a possibility anymore. To be honest, the closest it got to the pick, the more I started hoping that the goal machine from the US development program would be there for the taking when our turn came and he was! Yes, the Canadiens picked Cole Caufield!

The draft prospect rankings had Caufield as the 8th best north American skater and it was almost a miracle that he was still available mid-round. Why did he fall so low? Well, probably because he's short, he's only 5'7" and weights 163 lbs... But you know who was only 5'6"? Theoren Fleury. Who had a brilliant career at just 5'8"? Marty St-Louis and oh yeah... there's that 5'7" guy who plays with the Hawks and scored 40 goals this year Alex DeBrincat. While size used to be a big worry, I don't think it is that much in the new NHL. It's faster and there's nowhere near as much obstruction as there once was.

Now, what else can I say about Caufield? I think most will be interested in knowing this:

If this is not great news for a team that has struggled to score way too much in the past, I don't know what is. I mean, a 72 goals season...let that sink in for a minute... 72 goals just wow. A right winger, he can also play centre if needed and that's always a good option to have. Unsurprisingly, he is said to unleash his shot without warning and to have great accuracy. Furthermore, his low centre of gravity allows him to handle the puck with speed and even some flashiness. Yes Habs fan, I said flashiness, this is an electrifying goal scoring machine.

Enough talking though, let's have a look at what he can do:

Imagine having him in the shootout:
