The Calgary Flames discussed the possibilities of moving up and down in the draft, but ultimately decided to stay where they were at with the 26th overall pick.
There, they selected winger Jakob Pelletier –
one of the three prospects I recently zeroed in on as realistic targets for the team.
It might not have been the sexiest pick – especially with a few big names sliding and still available – but I think it was a good one.
No CHL draft eligible player who was selected last night recorded more points than Pelletier (89) this past season. Not one.
He puts up points in bunches, and he is efficient in doing so. Especially at even-strength, where he averaged more points per 60 than Kirby Dach, Peyton Krebs, Arthur Kaliyev, Ryan Suzuki, and Connor McMichael, among others.
His on-ice impact was remarkable, too. Moncton scored more than 66% of the even-strength goals with Pelletier out there, compared to ~50% without him. His Rel GF% of +16.04 was one of the highest totals in this class.
Pelletier brings a nice mixture of smarts, skill, and fearlessness to the table. His game is similar to Andrew Mangiapane's, although more advanced and further along at the same age.
I'll have more on this pick, and all other Flames happenings that transpire, in the coming days.
