After selecting defenseman Bowen Byram (No. 4) and center Alex Newhook (No. 16) in the first round of the 2019 NHL draft on Friday at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, the Avalanche had six picks Saturday and used them on four forwards, one defenseman and one goaltender. They didn't have a fourth-round pick.
The rundown:
* Second round (No. 47): Defenseman Drew Helleson, 18 (6-feet-3, 194 pounds) from Farmington, Minn., right-hand shot. Had 11 points (four goals, seven assists), 18 penalty minutes, plus-16 in 28 games with the U.S. National Team Development Program. Will join Newhook at Boston College in the fall.
NHL analyst Dave Reid: “Shutdown defender, keeps the game very simple, moves the puck with simple, straightforward passes, anchor on the back end.”
* Third round (No. 63, from Ottawa): Center/right wing Matthew Stienberg, 18 (6-1, 185) from Halifax, Nova Scotia. Final piece from the Matt Duchene trade. Had 75 points (33 goals, 42 assists), 98 penalty minutes in 56 games with St. Andrew’s College prep school in Aurora, Ontario. He’ll be heading to Cornell.
Reid: “Physical player, straightforward, straight line, big body player, loves to drive the net.”
* Third round (No. 78): Right wing Alex Beaucage, 17, (6-2, 192) from Trois-Rivieres, Quebec. Had 79 points (39 goals, 40 assists) in 68 games for the Rouyn-Nordnda Huskies of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, 16 points (five goals, 11 assists) in 16 postseason games.
Reid: “Big body guy, right shot, lots of hidden talent, bit of a man-child, shoots the puck extremely well.”
* Fifth round (140): Right wing Sasha Mutala, 18 (6-0, 200) from Vancouver. Had 41 points (20 goals, 21 assists) in 65 games with the Tri-City Americans of the Western Hockey League, one assist in five postseason games.
* Sixth round (No. 171): Right wing Luka Burzan, 19 (6-0, 184) from Surrey, British Columbia. Had 78 points (40 goals, 38 assists) in 68 games with the Brandon Wheat Kings of the WHL.
* Seventh round (No. 202): Goaltender Trent Miner, 18 (6-1, 179) from Brandon, Manitoba. Had a 24-5-1 record , three shutouts, 1.98 goals-against average, .924 save percentage in 32 games with the Vancouver Giants of the WHL.
