On Marner...

I was talking to a Leafs source just now and the sides are of course working on Marner, but there are still "multiple issues" to resolve from both camps. Without doubt, the largest issues right now are on the Maple Leafs side. Sources are telling me the Leafs see Marner as "priority 1A" right along with the need to make another big move to "balance the lineup." Signing Marner is pointless if the team stays the same or gets worse defensively...the Leafs need to bolster their D while at the same time opening up space for Marner...

Currently, with Zaitsev asking for a trade and Gardiner a UFA, they are worse on the backend than they were at seasons end. Dubas knows this all too well and also knows that had their defense been even 20% better in the playoffs they would have beaten Boston and then....who knows...

The answer???

The Leafs are talking to teams about moving Nylander for a top 2 D and a prospect..The Flyers, Hurricanes, and Predators are all interested in Nylander...

Why We Should All Want Offer Sheets.

The CBA is up for negotiation, in the VERY near future, and the belief among folks at the NHLPA and the player agents, is the compensation structures for offer sheets is way too prohibitive and therefore need to be changed so we can see more offer sheets and give RFA's a little more negotiating power... This could be a "hill for the players to die on" I have been told.

If with ALL this RFA talent available we don't see any offer sheets isn't that a sign that the offer sheet system is broken?
