The Calgary Flames entered this off-season with two key items on their wish list: a 1B goaltender, and a top-9 winger.
They have taken care of the former as Cam Talbot has signed a one-year, $2.75 million contract.
Despite Talbot posting the worst numbers of his career in 2018-19, he still managed a better 5v5 save percentage than Mike Smith while playing behind a significantly worse defensive team in Edmonton.
I think he is an upgrade and pretty affordable for someone who could play 35-45 games and potentially start come playoff time, depending how things play out.
Though the Flames are in a pretty tight spot financially, they are still actively searching for another top-9 winger.
My understanding is that they are among several teams pushing for UFA Micheal Ferland. I think he'd be cheaper than some of the other notables on the market and the Flames are obviously familiar with Ferland as a person and a player.
He has averaged 1.94 points per 60 at 5v5 over the last two seasons, which is a very solid rate. He'd provide some more scoring punch and the kind of physicality teams crave come playoff time.
I don't know that the Flames are front-runners for Ferland, but they're in the mix. Keep your eyes on that situation.
