The Avalanche announced Tuesday they’ve signed coach Jared Bednar to a two-year contract extension that runs through the 2021-22 season.

“Jared has done a tremendous job behind the bench and has earned the opportunity to continue leading this team,” general manager Joe Sakic said in a news release. “He is an outstanding coach who has the full trust of his players, coaches and staff. He has guided this franchise to two straight playoff appearances, and we are excited with what this group can do moving forward.”

Bednar completed his third season as head coach last season, leading Colorado to a 38-30-14 record and a second consecutive playoff berth, the first Avalanche team to make back-to-back playoff appearances in 13 years.

The Avalanche defeated Calgary, top seed in the Western Conference, in five games in the first round before losing to San Jose in seven games in the second round.

The Avalanche have gone 103-116-27 with Bednar, who was hired Aug. 25, 2016 after Patrick Roy resigned less than a month before training camp started. The Avalanche have gone 81-60-23 the past two seasons since the disastrous 48-point season in 2016-17.

“I’d like to thank Stan (Kroenke) and Josh Kroenke, Joe Sakic and the entire Avalanche organization for continuing to show their faith in me to lead this team,” Bednar said in a news release. “I am grateful and honored to be the head coach of the Avalanche. We’re moving in the right direction with the group that we have here. This team has an exciting future and I am ecstatic to be part of it.”

Bednar, 47, was a finalist for the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s coach of the year during his second season in 2017-18 when the Avalanche went 43-30-9 and earned a playoff berth with 95 points, a 47-improvement from his first season.
