The Detroit Red Wings announced Wednesday that their annual NHL Prospect Tournament and Training Camp would be returning to Centre Ice Arena in Traverse City, Mich. for the 21st year.

The event will run from Sept. 6-10. Along with the Red Wings, the eight team field consists of the Chicago Blackhawks, Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild, New York Rangers, St. Louis Blues, Toronto Maple Leafs and the defending champion Columbus Blue Jackets.

It’s the first time in the history of the event that the Leafs have participated.

Over 600 future NHL players have skated in the tournament, including 23 of the 38 players who suited up for the Wings during the 2018-19 season. The winning team is awarded the Matthew Wuest Memorial Trophy. Wuest, founder of the website CapGeek.com, covered the tournament for years for the website RedWingsCentral.com. He died of colon cancer in 2015.

The Wings, Leafs, Blues and Blackhawks will be housed in the Gordie Howe Division. Detroit plays Chicago Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. St. Louis will be the Wings’ opponent Sept. 7 at 3 p.m. Toronto and the Wings clash Sept. 8 at 6 p.m.

The tournament will wrap up with playoff action Sept. 10.

Main Training Camp
The Wings also announced that their main training camp would also be held again in Traverse City. The first on-ice session of main camp is slated for Sept. 13 and will continue with daily sessions through Sept. 16.

A full camp roster and times for daily sessions will be announced at a later date.

World Junior Summer Showcase
The future of the Wings will be well represented when the World Junior Summer Showcase comes to USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Mich. from July 26-Aug. 4. The top prospects for this season’s world junior championship will be on the ice in the four-team tournament that includes Canada, Sweden, Finland and the United States.

Center Otto Kivenmaki (191st, 2018) will play for Finland. Goalie Jesper Eliasson (84th, 2018) and forward Jonatan Berggren (33rd, 2018) are part of the Swedish team. Forward Joe Veleno (30th, 2018) and defenseman Jared McIsaac (36th, 2018) are on the Canadian roster, although shoulder surgery will keep McIsaac out of the tournament.

Defenseman Alec Regula (67th, 2018) and forward Robert Mastrosimone (54th, 2019) are on the USA roster. Mastrosimone suffered a broken ankle at the Wings’ development camp, so he’ll also be out of action.

Michigan State goalie Drew DeRidder, who attended the Wings development camp as a free agent, is also part of the USA team.

Tournament game action gets underway July 27 and continues through Aug. 3.
