A Big Thank You to Paul Holmgren

As a lifelong Flyers fan, today was a sad day: Paul Holmgren has stepped down as Flyers team president and will take on a largely ceremonial role as a senior advisor to Comcast-Spectacor's David Scott. With Homer's departure, the organization no longer has its staunchest remaining defender of the identity that Ed Snider forged -- a family-oriented organization that cared about its members as people as well as hockey players, was as fan-friendly as it gets in pro sports, and which always tried all out (with varying degrees of success but never for lack of desire) to put the most competitive possible team on the ice.

Quite frankly, anyone who calls himself or herself a Flyers fan that is celebrating the news of Holmgren stepping aside is clueless about all the good things that Holmgren has done in his many capacities with the team, including a near-miraculous turnaround from taking over as GM during the worst season in franchise history and turning it into a Cup contender within a year. Behind the scenes, Paul has done countless good deeds on behalf of people both inside and outside of hockey, because he is an amazing human being.

I also want to express a personal thank you to Paul for being such a good friend to our website over the years, from our site's earliest days until this very day.
