The Panthers maintained defensive depth by agreeing to terms with RFA blue liners MacKenzie Weegar and Ian McCoshen.

The Cats avoided arbitration with Weegar (which was scheduled for today), by signing him to a one-year, one-way deal worth $1.6 M.

Per LitterBoxCats:

"The 25-year-old, who was taken in the seventh round (206th overall) of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, appeared in 64 games and scored a career-high four goals and 11 assists and finished the 2018-19 season with a -3 rating."

McCoshen signed a one-year, two-way deal that will pay him $700 K at the NHL level.

Per NHL.com:

"McCoshen, 23, appeared in 19 games with Florida, recording two points (1-1-2). The 6-foot-3, 217-pound native of Anaheim, Calif., played in 38 games with Florida's American Hockey League affiliate, the Springfield Thunderbirds, producing nine assists.

He has appeared in 60 career NHL regular season games, all with Florida (2016-17 to 2018-19), registering seven points (4-3-7)."

Denis Malgin is Florida's remaining RFA.

What Do You Guys Think?

It seems like anytime the Panthers make signings like this on the backend, a lot of folks like to jump in with the, "I'd rather have [insert stellar, top four defenseman]."

Well...of course. It would be great to add stud back there, but it might not be in the cards right now. There's a lot that has to happen for trades to occur.

Personally, I like the deals. They're low risk and don't break the bank. Sure, these guys aren't top four blockbusters, but with Florida's blueline being what it is, they're two guys who have NHL experience and can slot in and hold their own.

What about the Q factor?

I'm curious to see how a lot of these young guys' games might change/look this upcoming season with Q at the helm. I have to believe that the Great Stache had some input when it came to resigning the RFAs that they have. There must be some confidence/belief from the coaching staff in their abilities.

We're slowly getting closer to the season, boys and girls...

Go Panthers!
