The Toronto Maple Leafs organization has drafted and developed a number of youngsters currently playing in the NHL, but with players like Kasperi Kapanen, Andreas Johnsson and Travis Dermott on their roster, the next step for the club is to keep replenishing the prospect pool to provide the Leafs with youngsters who can step up and replace veterans who retire, depart via free agency or are traded.

As we did last summer, we will rank the club’s top 25 prospects over the next few weeks based on their progress in either the NCAA, CHL, Europe or the American Hockey League and their potential to make the Leafs roster and make a contribution in the future.

Players are not eligible for the list if they are 25 years old or over, or if they have played more than 30 NHL games:

#13 – Mason Marchment – LW (Toronto - AHL)

2018 Ranking – 14

Marchment is an example of the Leafs recognizing a player that has talent that slipped through the cracks, giving him a chance, and that youngster making the most of an opportunity. The son of former NHLer Bryan Marchment was a teammate of Leaf defenseman Travis Dermott in Erie, also played for Hamilton and Mississauga before being invited to Leafs Development Camp in 2016 and being signed to an AHL contract.

The 6’4”. 193 lb. winger split time between ECHL Orlando (where he scored 14 goals in 35 games in 2017 and the AHL and earned a promotion to the AHL in 2017. The 24-year-old exceeded expectations and contributed offensively (26 points in 44 games) for the Marlies during the regular season and scored six goals in 20 playoff games in their run to a Calder Cup title.

A quite noticeable improvement in his skating, a willingness to go to the dirty areas, and an innate ability to get under the skin of the opposition are indicators that Marchment could eventually find his way to the NHL, but the lanky winger has had trouble staying healthy.

In 2017, Marchment missed over a month with a knee injury. Last season, he suffered a hand injury at the Leafs rookie tournament and missed the start of the year, and was out over two months with a broken collarbone. In spite of those absences, Marchment still managed a career-high 13 goals in 44 games and seven points (4 goals and 3 assists) in 13 playoff games.

With Mike Babcock looking for players with size and sandpaper to compliment the skill players in the Leafs lineup, a good performance at training camp could earn Marchment a spot on the NHL roster or a recall early in the season if injuries strike or if the head coach wants to shake things up.
