As they have done the last few seasons, the Toronto Maple Leafs trimmed their roster following the opening weekend of training camp. The Maple Leafs started camp with 71 active players and four on the injured list and have now cutdown to 54 players (31 forwards, 17 defensemen and six goaltenders).
2018 and 2019 draft picks Mikhail Abramov (Victoriaville), Semyon Der-Arguchintsev (Peterborough), Filip Kral (Spokane), Kalle Loponen (Sudbury), Nicholas Robertson (Peterborough) and Riley Stotts (Calgary), along with free-agent invite Marc-Antoine Pepin (Shawinigan) have been sent back to their junior clubs.
Forwards Matthew Bradley, Justin Brazeau, Giorgio Estephan, Brady Ferguson, Tanner MacMaster, Zach O’Brien, Scott Pooley, Marcus Power, defensemen Alex Gudbranson, Ryan Johnston, Michael Kapla, Aaron Luchuk, Sergei Sapego, and goalies Ian Scott and Maksim Zhukov have been reassigned to the Toronto Marlies (AHL) and will skate with the Maple Leafs Player Development Staff ahead of the Marlies’ 2019 training camp, which opens on September 24.
The Leafs open their preseason schedule on Tuesday, September 17 against Ottawa at Mile One Centre in St. John’s, and will take on the Senators in Kanata, ON on Wednesday, September 18.
