Bruins Win Via A Tank And A Horseshoe

The Bruins continued their winning ways yesterday (technically earlier today if you’re in the East) by beating the San Jose Sharks by a score of 2 to 1. The main reasons for the victory were a post that is magnetic towards pucks, a rabbit’s foot, a horseshoe, and Tim “The Tank” Thomas.

The Bruins came out flying, which seems to be the norm, but they were soon overwhelmed by the Sharks, which also seems to be the norm. They were overwhelmed but they did not stop trying and with a lot of luck (about five or six posts worth) and a lot of fine play by Tim Thomas (26 saves on 27 shots), the Bruins managed to pull out the win.

Patrice Bergeron tallied first for the Bruins and recorded a goal and assist in total. Aaron Ward scored the game winner with just eleven seconds left on the clock and only a few seconds after Michalek had scored for the Sharks to even up the game (there’s that luck thing again).

The Bergeron goal was not pretty but it did seem rather impressive that Bergeron was able to stay on his feet long enough to find the puck in a scrum in front of the San Jose net and pot it. Ward’s shot was a beauty but one that Nabokov probably would’ve stopped if it weren’t for some nice, quick puck movement that confused him.

This game looked like a sloppier version of the Bruins’ contest against the Anaheim Ducks but the Bruins definitely had more life and they didn’t seem to want to quit. Hopefully they can keep that attitude going for the rest of the year and especially on Thursday’s home-opener against the Lightning. The Bruins finish off their five game road trip with a record of 3-2-0, an improvement over last year’s opening five-gamer in which they went 1-3-1.

I would like to direct everyone’s attention to the Goals For and Goals Against columns of this TSN stat page:

It struck me that I couldn’t remember the last time I could look at the Bruins and see their Goals For outnumber their Goals Against. Enjoy it while you can.

The Bruins still looked shaky in the face-off circle. They should take advantage of the large break between now and their home-opener to work on that.

Here’s how the Bruins’ goaltending stats break down over the first five games:

Timmy: 2-1, .957 save %, 1.34 GAA
Manny: 1-1, .796 save %, 5.00 GAA

What a contrast. Hopefully Manny gets competitive about this because Tim is absolutely showing him up.
