Catnip: Cats vs Rangers

A quick turnaround and another afternoon game is set for the Panthers today in New York, where they’ll face the Rangers.

The Rags are hovering around .500 (7-6-1) and coming off a win against Carolina on Thursday.

The Cats are coming off a 2-1 loss to the Islanders in a game that was a goalie duel between Bob and Greiss.

I thought the Panthers played well. NYI is loaded with talent upfront and one of the things they seem to do well is compliment the forwards with solid play on the backend. Like Moller was saying yesterday, there’s really no superstars on the blueline for the Islanders, but what they have a group of guys that come together and do their job - particularly clearing the front of the net and letting their goalies see the shots.

The Call

I’m still a bit confused on the Barry goal that was called back. If it was a high stick, it looked like it then went off either the N.Y. defenseman or Greiss himself and in. I would think that would have negated the high stick call...

Many fans were outraged by this and said it was what really sank the Cats. I disagree. Sure, it was a bummer, but the reality is that the Panthers had one goal up until that point and you need a lot more than that to beat this talented Islanders squad.

PP Positivity

I called for it last blog and got a little bit of response. The PP looked slightly better yesterday, though still going 1/4. There was better movement and pressure. Now, we just need guys like Hoffman to hit the net with shots while we’re on it...

Against the Rangers

From the Panthers website:

“We'll move forward against a team that's playing pretty good right now, too." Quenneville said.

Florida has done well in the second half of back-to-back sets this season, earning points in two of three games while owning a 1-1-1 record. With Bobrovsky starting on Long Island, there's a good chance that backup Sam Montembeault is in between the pipes tomorrow in Manhattan.

Starting the second game of every back-to-back and making four appearances this season, the 23-year-old rookie has gone 1-1-1 with a 2.81 goals-against average and .905 save percentage.

"We have another chance tomorrow," Barkov said of facing the Rangers.

The Panthers have not competed in back-to-back matinees since October of 2016.
