Just when you thought their point streak would end, think again. That’s 27 of a possible 28 points in the last 14 games for the New York Islanders.
Here’s a recap from their shootout win in Philadelphia last night.
The Flyers opened the scoring just a minute and a half in, when Sean Couturier got a pass from Oskar Lindblom in a good location and snapped a shot by Thomas Greiss. Then on a power play with just 30 seconds to go in the period, Ivan Provorov’s point shot got through and beat Greiss to give Philadelphia the 2-0 lead.
While the Islanders pressed in the second period, outshooting the Flyers 13-4, it was Philadelphia who scored the only goal of the period. Off a neutral zone turnover, Joel Farabee got the puck to Oskar Lindblom on the wing who snapped a shot by Greiss. This was the one that Greiss maybe should’ve had, as it went right under his arm.
Brock Nelson then got a chance on a power play with about five minutes to go in the period but Brian Elliott slid across to make a great save. Then the Islanders managed to get a 3-on-1 but it ended with Casey Cizikas hitting the crossbar. Things didn’t look good for New York.
About eight minutes into the third period, Anthony Beauvillier caught the Flyers on a bad change and drove down the wing, slipping the puck under Elliott and giving the Islanders a bit of life. Then on a power play about six minutes later, Brock Nelson found Mathew Barzal in front and he beat Elliott to cut the lead to one.
With just two minutes to go, Beauvillier got his second of the game, backhanding a weak shot that somehow got through Elliott. It’s fun to see how excited Beauvillier and Derick Brassard were about scoring the goal, just one of those genuine moments where you can see how badly they wanted that.
The game went to overtime and Travis Sanheim (I think) nearly ended it with a wrap around but couldn’t jam it in past the post and a stick. So we went to a shootout.
Jordan Eberle was the first shooter and beat Elliott through the five-hole, then Sean Couturier put his chance off Greiss, off the bar and then it stopped dead around the goal line.
Barzal was next and took his chance to slide the puck under Elliott as well: so three or maybe even four of the five pucks that got by Elliott in the game were five-hole. Greiss then pokechecked the puck away from Claude Giroux to secure a win for the Islanders.
This was certainly a feel good win for New York. It showed determination and resiliency and proved that the Islanders can score goals when they need to.

- Derick Brassard has six goals and 12 points in his last 10 games.
- It’s early but Anthony Beauvillier is on pace for 55 points in an 82-game season.
- Brock Nelson is already at five multi-point games.
