All good things must come to an end.

The New York Islanders had their 17-game point streak snapped last night at the hands of the Anaheim Ducks. Here’s the game recap.

John Gibson made a great save to start the game, as a rebound popped out to Adam Pelech who took a shot from the point and Gibson, laying on the ice, reached up to make the glove save. Then a bit later, Gibson slid over to make a save on Jordan Eberle, who nearly directed the puck in with his skate. Late in the period, Anthony Beauvillier managed to beat Gibson with a wicked shot on the power play but the puck rang off the post. It was all New York in the first period, as they outshot Anaheim 16-5, yet it remained scoreless.

Anaheim opened the scoring in the second period, when Thomas Greiss made not one but two saves before Troy Terry knocked in the Ducks’ third attempt. Obviously New York can’t allow these kinds of second and third chances. Nick Leddy was really nowhere to be found on the goal. The Ducks owned the second period, outshooting the Islanders 15-7.

The third period wasn't great. Each team managed just three shots, yet the Ducks were able to score on two. First, Nick Leddy gave the puck away, then Ryan Getzlaf was able to get it to Cam Fowler, who beat Greiss from a great spot. Then just over a minute later, Ondrej Kase sealed the game, scoring a bad goal coming down the wing that he just threw on net and Greiss couldn’t handle. It was a pretty brutal goal.

All in all it wasn’t a terrible game from the Islanders though. If they bury one of their chances in the first period, maybe it goes differently. Still though, three shots in the third period when trailing isn’t going to get you many wins.

The key here is how New York responds in their next game. After they dropped their overtime game to Pittsburgh, they rebounded and kept their foot on the gas. That’s what they’ll need to do tomorrow night in Los Angeles.
