For the second time this season, the New York Rangers stole a win from the Carolina Hurricanes. Here’s the game recap.

The Rangers got out to a quick start, as Adam Fox found Mika Zibanejad at the side of the net with a perfect pass to make it 1-0 on a power play. Then just over a minute later, Petr Mrazek, for whatever reason, had a ton of trouble getting over to square himself up to Brendan Smith’s point shot, which beat him as well. Just like that, four minutes in and it’s already 2-0 New York.

The Rangers would add to their lead in the final couple minutes of the period, as Adam Fox deflected Artemi Panarin’s point shot past Mrazek. The Hurricanes did get a couple good chances, including a flurry of shots from right in front of the net, but Henrik Lundqvist came up big (which is starting to seem like a bit of a theme).

A three-goal deficit is hard to erase– but Carolina certainly tried, outshooting the Rangers 33-14 in the final two periods.

The Hurricanes got on the board with a power play goal of their own, as Ryan Dzingel deflected in a point shot from Dougie Hamilton. Then just a minute and a half later, Jaccob Slavin made a great pinch to keep the puck in New York’s end and Warren Foegele jammed the puck past Lundqvist to cut the lead to 3-2. Carolina just about tied it right after Foegele’s goal but Lundqvist made a ridiculous stick save to rob Martin Necas.

In the third period, the Hurricanes pressed but came up short. Andrei Svechnikov had a golden chance all alone in front with about six minutes left but rang it off the crossbar. Carolina then had a power play late but couldn’t beat Lundqvist, as the Rangers hung on for the win.

In their two games against New York this year, Carolina has outshot the Rangers by a ridiculous 90-43 margin but have somehow been outscored 7-3. Mrazek had trouble controlling some pretty basic rebounds last night. At times it looked like he was fighting the puck rather than simply collecting it.

Carolina’s next game comes tomorrow against the Nashville Predators.
