Ray Emery should start against Florida

With Ottawa Senators head coach John Paddock announcing today that he won't release who his starting goalie will be until gameday, I thought I would lend a hand in helping him select his man between the pipes for tomorrow nights game here in Ottawa when the Florida Panthers come to town.

Martin Gerber has been outstanding in his 7 starts this season and has rightfully earned the praise from fans and management.

But now comes time for Ray Emery to return to action after missing an extended period of time due to wrist surgery. Emery was the number one goalie to end last springs Stanley Cup playoff run and should now be given a chance to start and show that he is capable of leading his team once again. If Emery doesn't start tomorrow night, he will be off over 2 weeks between starts after his conditioning stint in Binghamton and possibly risk the rust to be that much greater when he does start. Ottawa is off until Saturday night after the Florida game.

Florida is the type of opponent Emery needs to get his feet back under him. The pressure won't be as great had he faced a division rival and the Panthers are not one of the stronger teams to start the season. Let Emery gain a little confidence tomorrow night and give him the start.

I am sure Paddock already has in mind who is goaltender will be come 7pm EST Saturday night but I thought I would plead the case for Ray Emery as the strength of this team will be the depth they have in goal and Emery should be given every opportunity to reclaim his number status.

Just quickly, no sense in rushing Antoine Vermette back into the line-up after leaving last nights game due to back spasms. Give him tomorrow night off and get him ready for next Saturdays game in New Jersey.
