Game 46: Canadiens vs Senators AKA The Streak is Over

Ladies and gents, believe it or not but the year is 2020 and the Montreal Canadiens have just won a game thanks to a Ilya Kovalchuk goal. That goal was not only his first with the Habs but it also allowed the Tricolore to win its first game since Christmas...seems like forever ago doesn't it? While the Habs did take the lead off a wicked Suzuki shot on the power play in the first period, they kind of decided to stop playing in the second and let the Senators take the game to them...

Price weathered the storm in the second and for much of the third...until a fluky goal went in... The puck deflected off a couple of skates and was then given the smallest of pushes by Matthew Peca and slowly sled by Price to end up in the net. In the 2nd frame, the Habs took 7 shots and in the 3rd, they only took 2... How can a team expect to win if they don't take shots? Somebody must have passed on the message between the 3rd and the overtime since they took 8 shots in the 4 minutes that the overtime lasted.

While most of the fans now want the team to lose to improve its odds of winning the Lafrenière derby, it was clear when the Kovalchuk goal went in that this team still wants to win. Furthermore, it's hard not to notice how happy the players were that Kovalchuk scored his first with the team especially after he missed his first chance on the breakaway in OT. As for Carey Price, he made 41 saves on 42 shots tonight for a .976 save percentage, that being said, a lot of those shots were easy saves but he still had to make them. Chances are, this game will do wonders for his confidence.

The Habs will be back in action on Monday night when they host the Calgary Flames at the Bell Centre. It would be rather surprising to see any of the injured players come back for that one but it doesn't matter really, we can keep ourselves entertained with the Kovalshow. At this stage, I'm hoping for wins but I'm not disappointed with loses...Why? Well, finishing last doesn't automatically give you the first pick. The team that finishes dead last only has an 18.5% chance of landing the top spot in the draft and to be honest, I truly believe that what should happen will happen. If the Habs are destined to pick Lafrenière, they'll win the lottery even if they only have something like 4% odds to do so.
