Jordan Eberle had a rough season last year that saw him fall well short of expectations in terms of production. But after a great playoff performance and great showings in the preseason (though I know that’s not much to base a real review off of), it really seemed like this year would be somewhat of bounce back for Eberle. After playing 33 games thus far he’s on pace for just 45 points/82, which, though better, doesn’t match up to what we’ve seen from him before.
However, before his one point in the last eight games, he had 17 points in 25 games, averaging to about 56 points per 82, which is a solid pace. He’s also averaged 2.5 shots per game in the eight-game stretch, which is actually up from his two-shot per game average from the other 25 games of the year.
For Eberle, some of it comes down to an inability to finish. His shooting percentage is just 5.7 per cent this year—the lowest of any Islanders forward not named Leo Komarov. In four of the last five years, his shooting percentage has been between about 12 and 14.5 per cent, with the outlier still being 9.6 per cent. If his shooting percentage this year even matched his 11.9 per cent from last season, which is still below average for him, he’d already have four more goals and would be on pace for a 20-goal year (per 82 games).
His 2.12 shots per game this season, while low for him career-wise, is slightly higher than last year. He also has a 53.1 CF%, which is the highest among all Islanders forwards.
The point is, though he’s going through a rough patch, signs point to the fact that he’ll be rebounding from it. New York could use some offense and Eberle’s return to form couldn’t come at a better time for New York's offense.
