Big news today...

The Washington Capitals have extended Nicklas Backstrom for 5-years and $46 million dollars.

This puts the pressure firmly into the Ovechkin Camp. Ovechkin is already signed for one more year, but there is mounting speculation that last year could be his last in Washington and the NHL. It is no secret that Russian Hockey wants to hand the throne to OV, and he has been a staunch supporter of Russian Hockey from the start. It is easy to see how Russia could offer him a ton of money to play in the KHL and then take over heading up Russian Hockey.

Backstrom's contract also puts more doubt as to Holtby's future in Washington. Holtby will be a UFA come July 1 and there has been very little talk on the subject...
