Please don’t hire Boudreau....

As I was pondering how best to sarcastically describe last night’s third period debacle in New Jersey (headlines like, “Wings 3 period play stinks worse than Hoboken” were dancing around) I saw this. Bruce Boudreau has been fired by the Minnesota Wild.

In the pondering of coaching changes (Gallant still my favorite available) someone and brought up Boudreau as a very good coach. “Gabby” is a head scratcher. His Caps teams couldn’t win, Anaheim certainly didn’t win, and Minnesota is almost officially on the doorstep of “why did we pay Suter and Parise so much for so long?” Both very good players, but the deal starts to ferment a bit.

I don’t have a lot of confidence in the thought of Gabby coming to Detroit. He’s sort of the anti-Gallant. GG took a roster of cast offs (and a world class goalie) and got them on the same page playing as a team. Boudreau has had all stars and the teams seem to fall apart. Detroit needs structure, and a lot of it. It’s not as easy as it sounds. Sheldon Keefe quipped that, “the better we are defensively the fewer goals we score”. Basically, the same mantra that had Babcock turning on a spit. Detroit has far less firepower and greater defensive needs.

Gabby will be hired again. Someone, somewhere, is pitching a fit and ready for a replacement. Detroit, thankfully, has been patient so far. Hiring for the sake of hiring wouldn’t do a lot of good right now. A third of this team could be gone by the summer. Yzerman has a clear vision of what he’s building and who the right engineer is behind the bench. I feel we will find out before the draft, but that’s just rampant speculation.

It was hard not to be excited pre game yesterday. Fabbri was back, Mantha is back, Athanasiou is finding his game (and notched Detroit’s lone tally). However, Detroit’s third period was a forgettable one. The saving grace is that there are only 23 more games in this lost season. 23 more times to shake your head and wonder how on earth this team will get things turned around. The enigma that is Boston is on the horizon Saturday. I am certain the Bruins don’t want to lose a 6th straight to Detroit. There seems to be a “Bermuda Triangle” effect on Boston’s game when entering these troubled waters. We’ll see if Detroit can serve up another ship wreck for one of the top teams in the league on Saturday.
