If you look closely in the trade waters you might see a fin popping up breaking the surface. If you look really close you may see two fins. The names are these Sharks are Patrick Marleau and Joe Thornton. It appears the Penguins may have interest in Marleau and that Joe Thornton is open to being traded to a contender, which includes Pittsburgh.

Here is a snapshot of the 2019-20 seasons the two San Jose legends are having

The Penguins are looking for third liners and if you don’t hold these players to their past standards they fit the bill. Now, it is rumored the Penguins are looking for a winger and not a center so Marleau would have the inside track between the two players. Marleau does have an advanced age for the sport, but he can still move well enough. This isn’t a situation where you are getting a slow player.

Cap hits for either player is a non-issue. Thornton makes 2M and Marleau is only 700k. The days of those two making 6M+ are over. There are certainly arguments to be made there are other options who might better fit the Penguins needs. I do imagine the cost to acquire Marleau will be reasonable because the player isn't as valuable as he used to be and the Sharks would probably want to do right by the player.

Here are some other options mentioned in the blog other than the two Sharks: Conor Sheary, Tyler Ennis, Erik Haula, Mikael Granlund. None of these players are game breakers, duh. That is why it is being reported the Penguins are looking for a “third line” player. They already made their big move with Jason Zucker. Any move they make today is likely to not be flashy. I won’t mean it isn’t impactful because if the Blueger line is the fourth line instead of the third line it is a big change in a positive direction.

Stay tuned.
