You know I can’t lie, I didn’t think Dominik Kahun would be on the move today. His start with the Penguins was very quiet. He wasn’t doing much, but over the course of the year he found his footing and was pretty good for the Penguins. I liked his hands and his vision. He will be going to the Buffalo Sabres. I don’t know if Kahun’s pending raise was an issue for the Penguins, but he is gone none the less.

The Conor Sheary speculation was accurate and the familiar winger will reunite with his Stanley Cup winning teammates along with Evan Rodrigues.

Overall, the Penguins did OK here even though they did part with a very useful depth player. The trade works because I do think Sheary is a good player and Rodrigues is solid depth for cheap. Here is a comparison of Kahun and Sheary this season.

Sheary has better underlying numbers and Kahun has better offensive numbers. Sheary was not on the Eichel line in Buffalo so that isn’t going to help get the offense going. He should be better in Pittsburgh with a better supporting cast around him. He can be moved around the lineup and don’t be shocked if he sees time with Sidney Crosby.

Here is a breakdown from Micah Blake McCurdy for all players involved

The Penguins lost Dominik Kahun from the active roster and gained Patrick Marleau, Conor Sheary, and Evan Rodrigues today. It is an improvement and a successful day. When you throw Zucker into the mix this string of moves are all positive. I don’t know why there was a two year hiatus in proper roster construction, but at least we are back to logical moves to improve team speed and skill. Assuming we don’t get “deals can be announced after 3PM” surprise with the next Erik Gudbranson the Penguins will have done well here.
