Recapping the Sens Marketplace

April was never going to be a particularly exciting time for the Ottawa Senators. The draft was still scheduled to be a couple months away. The season would have been winding down. Things came to a halt much sooner than expected, of course, which spawned the idea for the Sens Marketplace. Tonight, it’s time for a recap:

The Premise: I proposed a completely fictional trade between the Ottawa Senators and each of their division rivals. You voted on the proposed deals from each team’s perspective. A majority vote in favor by both teams meant a trade was accepted, whereas any other combination of results meant rejection.

The Goal: Have a bit of fun and generate some discussion. I think we nailed it on both fronts. Thanks to everyone for playing along.

The Results:

We completed two trades, one with the Toronto Maple Leafs and one with the Detroit Red Wings. A summary of those trades is included below:

Closing Thoughts:
At first glance, it feels like the Senators gave up a lot of draft capital in the deals that were accepted. After some thought, though, the value exchanged seems generally fair. The Senators clear out some bad money in the form of Nikita Zaitsev, and acquire a true top-line offensive threat on an absurdly good contract in Nylander. Pulling off both those things would cost an immense amount in the real NHL. To do it without touching either the Ottawa pick or San Jose pick at the top of the 2020 first round would be a big win for the Senators.

I hope everyone enjoyed participating in the Sens Marketplace. I know I enjoyed putting this completely fictional scenario together, explaining my rationale, and receiving feedback (even from Tampa fans on Twitter who took this way too seriously…). There’s still plenty to look forward to here at HockeyBuzz as we work our way through this self-isolated world, so stay tuned.

As always, thanks for reading.
