Quick Hits: May 22, 2020

1) According to multiple outlets, the 24-team expanded playoff proposal for an NHL restart from the NHL/NHLPA return-to-play committee has gone to the NHLPA executive board for approval. Under one of the most oft-mentioned scenarios, the Flyers would automatically qualify for the playoffs but would still first have play three additional quasi "regular season" games (against Washington, Boston and Tampa Bay) for playoff seeding purposes before they would play a team that qualifies based on a play-in format.

2) The "Flyers Decades: 1973-74" program will stream tonight at 8 p.m. ET on the Flyers Alumni's YouTube channel. Hosts Bill Clement and Jim Jackson will be joined by panelists Bernie Parent, Bob Clarke, Bill Barber, Joe Watson and Terry Crisp. There were also be a live chatroom during the event, which I will moderate.

3) May 22: Flyers alum defenseman Janne Niinimaa celebrates his 45th birthday.

4) Today in Flyers History: May 22, 2010

Riding waiver-wire pickup goaltender Michael Leighton's third shutout performance in the 2010 Eastern Conference Final, the Flyers built a three games to one lead over the Montreal Canadiens with a 3-0 road win in Game Four. After a scoreless first period, Claude Giroux and Ville Leino notched second period goals to build a 2-0 lead. Leighton, who saw just 17 shots for the game and few of significant danger, nailed down the shutout in the final stanza. Giroux added an empty netter for his second goal of the game and eighth of the 2010 playoffs.
