Detroit released a behind the scenes documentary. You can watch episode one up above. All episodes are now available, and I’ll post thoughts on each one this week.
Of note, listen to how numbers are presented. 42 years between championships. 14 years for Yzerman to lift the cup from being drafted. Patience being preached, etc. The repay of last year’s draft lottery is a little bit painful. In retrospect, neither Hughes or Kakko lit it up this year (not to say they won’t in their next season). Re living the pick of Seider is always fun.
The other smile comes with the prospects tournament in Traverse City. Detroit won it, and things just looked so positive at that point. I remember Zadina struggling and someone actually said to me that they thought he was done. At 19. Veleno had a good tournament so I was also told that he just booted Zadina out of a spot. Good grief.
Tournaments are a fascinating glimpse. Unlikely heroes are created and good players can go cold. It’s just reality. Zadina ended up having a much better year (until injured) and Veleno had a difficult time. I still believe JV is a good pickup, he just needs to take the hard lessons from the AHL and, like Zadina, get stronger and make faster decisions.
This first episode is a good watch. I hope you enjoy it!
