Albin Grewe selected by Saginaw, prospects tournament cancelled |

The New Jersey Devils rebuild was front and center yesterday. As promised, I will try and keep you updated on any movements within or concerning the Detroit organization. Finally, something clicked.
Albin Grewe, Detroit’s 3rd round pick (66th) in the 2019 draft, was drafted by the Saginaw Spirit in the CHL. The press release stated “Grewe is a very competitive and tenacious player that works extremely hard and pushes the pace when on the ice. His mix of skill and high compete will fit in well with our team here in Saginaw, and I know our coaches can’t wait to see him in our uniform next season.”
The interesting part here is compliance with Yzerman’s philosophy in drafting last year. Compete level. Every pick found themselves with that tag. Now, in reality, that doesn’t mean these players will be in the AHL or NHL, but nice to see on the North American jr level they’ve garnered some attention. It will be interesting to see how Grewe fares in Saginaw.
Mlive posted this at the draft last year. Descriptors like “agitator” and, “gets under opponents skin” were attached to the pick. Good size at 6’, Grewe had 7 goals and 13 assists playing in the SHL and SuperElit leagues.
Detroit has cancelled the Prospect’s Tournament, and won’t be heading to Traverse City for training camp either for next season. They expect to return for the 21-22 season. To be fair, December in Traverse City isn’t the friendliest time to be driving around.
