Yesterday the Panthers aired the first episode of their docuseries, “Panthers Uncaged.”
I wasn’t sure what to expect, as these things can sometimes miss the mark a bit. However, I must admit, I was pleasantly surprised watching.
For starters, the episode length is perfect. I was expecting a 3-5 minute cheesy/“ra-ra” piece, but at 20 minutes, it’s enough time to put together a really nice little piece.
The episode focuses on the disappointment of the 2018-19 campaign, new hope with the hiring of Q, and then a brief recap of the 2019-20 yo-yo season thus far. A big portion of it pulls back the curtain on the Coronavirus stoppage and it’s effect on players/the league. I enjoyed hearing the player’s thoughts and what they did during the time off - particularly family men like Brian Boyle and Q.
Some of the footage is from things you’ve already seen (interviews, etc.), but a lot of it is new (at least to me) and that was great to see.
The only knock I have, and it’s really nothing, was the brief segments about NYI. Taking a guess here, but the series will mostly likely end with NYI on the horizon. The first episode sets the tone by building through last season, the virus emerging, return to practice, etc. They had a couple snippets in there about the Islanders that seemed kind of out of place to me given the context of what episode one was all about. You know the Isles are coming in later episodes, I didn’t think they needed to be mentioned yet...that being said, it by no means detracts or diminishes anything from the viewing experience.
Overall, I give the first episode 3 out of 4 stars. The narration, combined with behind-the-scenes/game/interview footage all blends together nicely to give this a pretty legitimate documentary feel. Some points off for the goofy “static” effects on screen and during some cuts. Haha.
The Big Debate
Following the crazy turn of events from last week’s draft lottery has a lot of fans of qualifying round teams wondering:
“Do I want my team to win the round and advance to the playoffs, or lose and get that 12.5% chance of getting the first pick?”
Personally, I want the Cats to win and keep going. They have no other choice. They were touted to be the “next thing” and fell apart last year. They seem to be a perennial “on the rise” team and never grab the opportunity and run with it. Time to do it.
High draft picks and prospects are tempting, but this organization needs to win, keep rolling, and make a statement. Become what we/others think they are (or should be).
The whole thing is a double-edge sword, so just charge forward with the goal that’s been in the crosshairs all along: winning.
I’ll tell you who probably isn’t concerned about a pick or prospect...the guys in the locker room. They want that shiny cup and ring...
“It kind of reminds me of that first day of school feeling where you’re giddy and ready to see your friends.”
