Cory Schneider may not be a part of the New Jersey Devils in 2020-21. He’ll still cost a pretty penny on the books, though.
With news that there won’t be an amnesty clause coming as part of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement, the Devils will have no easy way out from Schneider’s contract.
It is not as big of a deal for the Devils as it would be for most other teams – they’re very well off financially – but it is still a nuisance.
Cap space was already an immense luxury. Given the relatively flat cap we’re going to see over the next couple of years, space will be even more valuable. Simply put, very few teams will have any wiggle room – let alone millions and millions.
Make no mistake: the Devils will have plenty of space to leverage in trade negotiations and free agency. But no amnesty clause prevents the Devils from having an additional $6 million, which would legitimately give them the freedom to jump on every opportunity that comes their way.
Instead, the Devils have to either a) suck up the $6 million cap hit for at least one more year or; b) buy Schneider out the old fashioned way.
The latter would save the Devils $4 million in each of the next two seasons before *costing* them $2 million in the two years that follow, according to CapFriendly.com.
Given the room they have right now, they may elect to keep Schneider on the books for another year. That would ensure they don’t get a multi-million dollar penalty down the road when Nico Hischier, Jack Hughes, Jesper Bratt, Mackenzie Blackwood, and co. all cost significantly more than they did this season.
In recent years Schneider has caused the Devils issues on the ice; and there’s no escape route coming to prevent him from doing so off of it.
