In this edition of the hotstove, we share our choices for most underrated player on the Philadelphia Flyers.

Todd Cordell

Nicolas Aube-Kubel.

The 24-year-old quietly put together a strong season for the surprisingly excellent Philadelphia Flyers. Offensively he managed 15 points in just 36 games, which equates to 34 over a full season. Those numbers may not pop off the page but they’re impressive for a rookie playing ~11 minutes a night and starting the majority of his shifts outside the offensive zone.

There’s a reason Aube-Kubel was given that kind of usage. He’s a fantastic forechecker and his play without the puck is as good as *almost* anybody on the Flyers roster. He is relentless after puck carriers, he knows how to use his stick and low center of gravity to regain possession, and he’s excellent at getting on top of opponents and sniffing things out in the neutral zone.

Sean Maloughney

Scott Laughton.

The 25 year old had something of a breakout season, scoring a career high 13 goals through only 49 games; something it took him a full season to do the year prior.

Averaging just over 14 minutes a night, Laughton found himself on a third line. Producing at just over a .5 ppg clip in that type of role is impressive on it's own, especially considering all is points came at EV. Laughton played essentially no time at all on the PP, but was their fourth most used forward on the PK.

To emphasize how good Laughton was at evens this season, look no further than his ESP/60 which sat at 2.586. Only Sean Couturier produced at a higher clip. Laughton's numbers there surpassed the likes of Konecny, Voracek, and van Riemsdyk. Laughton should be a player to watch during the Flyers first playoff series as a sleeper.
