The National Hockey League released the details of Phase 4 of their Return To Play plan on Friday after the NHL Players Association and Board of Governors ratified the Collective Bargaining Agreement, including the accommodations for the 12 clubs in Toronto and the schedule for the play-in round that begins on August 1.

The Toronto Maple Leafs, along with the Carolina Hurricanes, Columbus Blue Jackets, Florida Panthers, Montreal Canadiens, New York Islanders and New York Rangers will be housed at the Royal York Hotel (within walking distance of Scotiabank Arena), while the Boston Bruins, Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Washington Capitals will be at Hotel X (off of Lakeshore Blvd near the Coca-Cola Coliseum, home of the AHL Marlies).

The Leafs and Blue Jackets will not play on the opening night of the playoffs, opening their best-of-five series on Sunday, August 2nd. The first three games will have a rest day in-between, with Game 2 on Tuesday, August 4th and Game 3 on Thursday, August 6, but Game 4 (if necessary) is scheduled as a back-to-back on Friday, August 7 and a deciding Game 5 on Sunday, August 9th.

The broadcast schedule has yet to be released by the league, but the Leafs are the only play-in game on Sunday, which almost certainly means a primetime start. Game 2 is the same night as Game 2 of the Panthers-Isles and Game 3 of the Rangers-Hurricanes, which could mean a 12 Noon or 4pm starting time.

The Leafs will begin Phase 3 with the opening of training camp at the Ford Performance Centre on Monday, where we will see the full roster on the ice for the first time since March 10th.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly, NHLPA Executive Director Don Fehr and NHLPA Special Assistant to the Executive Director Mathieu Schneider held a conference call on Saturday to discuss the finer points of the new CBA and one item that will be central in the next few weeks will be reporting on players who may have contracted COVID-19.

“We've obviously dealt with that situation and talked to the Players' Association about it and continue to feel that medical privacy is important in this process. Having said that, we understand as a league we have an obligation of some transparency with respect to the COVID virus in particular.” Daly said. “We're going to maintain a policy where the league is announcing basically league numbers, and clubs are really prohibited from giving any information with respect to COVID test results, and for purposes of making the system work, any injury information going forward. We will be releasing numbers. We'll be releasing positive test numbers that the media and the public will know what kind of situation we're in, but we don't want to be in a situation where we're doing it on a club-by-club basis or a player-by-player basis because I think the interests of medical privacy are important, and we're going to protect them.”
