The Ottawa Senators announced today that they have named Brady Tkachuk as their nominee for the 2019-20 King Clancy Memorial Trophy. The award, presented annually “to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community,” receives nominations from all 31 teams in advance of the three finalists and ultimate winner being named.

There is no doubt that Tkachuk has established himself as one of the leaders on this young Senators team. Right now, he, more than any other player, is probably the “face” of the next generation and rebuild. Thomas Chabot has the big contract, but Tkachuk is emblematic of the youthful, exciting, pesky playing style that came to define Senators hockey in 2019-20.

Beyond his noticeable impact on the ice, Tkachuk has also established himself as an active participant in Senators Foundation events and initiatives, plus other community-minded endeavours. Consider the “Battle of the Bros” he, his brother Matthew, and the Hughes siblings took part in earlier this year as an example. He’s clearly leading both on and off the ice.

The Sens social media sphere was generally and rightfully supportive of Brady’s nomination, but even some of the most supportive voices were left questioning why Mark Borowiecki wasn’t the choice. Borowiecki’s work in the community is incredibly well documented, both as a supporter of charitable causes and as a champion of human rights. And then there’s the whole “crime fighting hero” thing. If he isn’t going to be re-signed heading into 2020-21, nominating him could have been a very kind and symbolic parting gesture.

With that said, the fact that the Senators had at least two excellent choices available to them for this nomination speaks to the high-quality culture being developed within the organization as it continues to rebuild. This is a good “problem” to have.
