Did Yzerman miss out on a chance to sign Edmundson?

The financials for the NHL are looking a bit bleak. I’ve been reviewing my “formula” where I’d estimated about 1.7 million in lost revenue per game without fans. Scott Burnside of The Athletic came up with the same number, though we came about it in slightly different ways. He’d listed the average ticket sale at about $75 but factored in parking and other items. However, as he did point out, Playoff tickets typically cost more, so my factoring may not completely wrong at $100. Regardless, there are clear economic impacts and it’s a bit of “wait and see” to try and figure out what teams will do.

In player news, The Montreal Canadiens have acquired the “rights” to pending UFA Joel Edmundson from the Carolina Hurricanes. While this doesn’t guarantee that he will sign, spending a 5th round pick to have an opportunity to negotiate seems like an easy decision. The big left shot defenseman is coming off of a $3 million dollar deal, and just one year in Carolina after being part of a cup winning team in St. Louis. At 27, there’s a lot to like about this player. The opportunity to play alongside Shea Weber or Jeff Petry may be enough to keep him in Montreal. There’s always a chance that he wants to see what the market will yield, though. I would love to see him alongside Hronek or even Seider.

Gustav LIndstrom and Dennis Cholowski will get a look in November. Jared McIsaac has a lot of potential as well. Dekeyser, hopefully the time off will help him stay healthy. If not, the left side looks fairly bleak. The right side has it’s issues, but Hronek has shown some promise. Seider may have some really good looks, but at 19/20 it’s a tough league and there will be some learning curves. Thankfully he’s getting quite a good workout overseas and will have competed in meaningful games. Hronek will also, as he is playing overseas.

As you can see up top, Zadina helped his team win some gold, and even assisted on the game winner. I have high hopes for this young prospect. Confidence is everything, and he seems to be brimming with it! The fact that Joe Veleno didn’t join him is one that still has me scratching my head. With the “virtual draft” less than 4 weeks away, I still wonder if NYR has checked in on a possible deal for the young center. The competition overseas would certainly have helped, but the injury risk comes in to factor if someone is kicking the tires. I’m in NO hurry to see him go, but I do believe Yzerman would get the best possible return.

So, where are you at? Would you have spent a 5th round pick to get in an early interview on Edmundson? Let me know!
