The Carolina Hurricanes selected seven more players in Rounds 2-7 of the 2020 NHL Draft yesterday.

The Hurricanes made only one trade during the day, moving down from 140th overall to 159th overall, picking up a 2021 seventh-round pick in the process.

Here’s a list of every player selected by the Hurricanes, as well as a brief description on each player and some general thoughts on the draft:

1st Round, 13th Overall: Seth Jarvis (F)
2nd Round, 41st Overall: Noel Gunler (F)
2nd Round, 53rd Overall: Vasily Ponomarev (F)
3rd Round, 69th Overall: Alexander Nikishin (D)
4th Round, 115th Overall: Zion Nybeck (F)
6th Round, 159th Overall: Lucas Mercuri (F)
7th Round, 199th Overall: Alexander Pashin (F)
7th Round, 208th Overall: Ronan Seeley (D)

Seth Jarvis- he’s a highly skilled forward who put up huge numbers in the WHL this past season. He’s likely still a couple years away but expect him to be a top-six forward in the NHL.

Noel Gunler- Gunler dropped quite a bit in the rankings and it was surprising to see him still around at 41st overall. The right-shot winger didn’t take a huge step production-wise in the 2019-20 season but still managed 13 points in 45 SHL games.

Vasily Ponomarev- the left-handed center spent the year in the QMJHL with the Shawinigan Cataractes, where he posted solid numbers, scoring 18 goals and 49 points in 57 games.

Alexander Nikishin- Nikishin is a big, 6-foot-3 left-handed defenseman. He spent the majority of the 2019-20 season in the KHL, where he played 29 games.

Zion Nybeck- Nybeck is a short winger who put up huge numbers in the J20 SuperElit this past season, scoring 27 goals and 66 points in 42 games. However, he did manage just one point in 15 SHL games.

Lucas Mercuri- A 6-foot-3, 200-pound center, Mercuri split his year between high school hockey and AAA-level hockey.

Alexander Pashin- Pashin may be just 5-foot-7 but his offensive production speaks for itself, with 17 goals and 39 points in 37 MHL games. This year, he’s scored two goals and five points in three games to start the year.

Ronan Seeley- With the Everett Silvertips, Seeley had 32 points in 63 games, to go along with a plus-22 rating in the WHL this past season.

ANALYSIS

It was interesting to see the Hurricanes use six of their first seven picks to select forwards. The Hurricanes do need a stronger second line but I really wouldn’t say they needed to stockpile forwards like they did. I also think it could’ve been nice to see them draft another goalie at some point. That said, Noel Gunler was a great pick at 41st overall.
