I was quite looking forward to this interview, one of the reasons being that Knuckles is probably the biggest high-profile fan of Gallagher out there (although I’m not sure that still holds true after hearing Bergevin choke up repeatedly after talking about him). It’s not hard to understand why given the way Brendan Gallagher plays the game with a mix of skill, dedication and just the right amount of sandpaper. They played a nice little montage before speaking to Gallagher which was in essence a retrospective of his 8 years in Montreal and the first thing he said is that he owed whoever had made it a nice dinner. Kind of funny since number 11 is known as a bit of a cheapskate amongst his teammates as Andrew Shaw reminded us all in the hours following Gally’s contract signing:
Both Knuckles and Sean Campbell fired a few questions at the Habs assistant captain and there were a few highlights in there. I thought it was interesting when he was asked if the fact that so many people called the Habs too small was ever insulting to him. Unsurprisingly, he kind of laughed it off and said that he never took it as an insult. He’s used to being the smallest player on this ice but he plays his game and it’s all about winning his battles, which he does pretty well. As a kid, Gallagher was an Oilers fan, logical since he was born in Edmonton and while his favourite hockey player was Marty St-Louis, his favourite Oilers were Mike Comrie and Raffi Torres – he laughed saying that and adding that he might have been the only one who had Torres as their favourite player.
The whole contract negotiations episode was of course mentioned and while Gallagher said it never came close to him walking away from the Habs, the thought still crossed his mind and at that stage he asked himself how important it was for him to be a Montreal Canadiens. There comes a time when you have to ask yourself if you’d be ok with the possibility of not being a Hab anymore and that really makes you think. It was important for him to be with a team that appreciates him but also a team that is competitive and the recent moves by Bergevin sure have made the situation exciting.
When asked what his 28-year-old self would say to his 20-year-old self if he could go back in time, he laughed and said: “I’d tell him to shut his mouth with the refs! That would have made my life so much easier! If you want respect from the refs, you have to give them respect as well. I had a lot of trouble with that and I still do sometimes.” When asked, he mentioned that for him, the best ref is Kelly Sutherland and that he sees the game as well as any ref out there on top of giving him respect from day 1.
Campbell asked him what makes a good line and he replied that it’s communication, just talking and understanding how your linemates see and understand the game. Every player doesn’t see the game the same way but when you know how the guys on your line think, it goes a long way to make a great line so those chats on the bench really are important.
Gallagher also mentioned that he thinks the heat Bergevin has taken over the years has been unfair. He calls him passionate about winning and added that he really understands what their locker room is like (I couldn’t help but think about Subban being traded there) and makes the best moves accordingly. Furthermore, he said that sometimes, it takes patience you have to wait until it’s time to make certain moves and clearly, Bergevin now sees that the time has come to act.
He was then asked a few questions that fans had texted in and these were worth mentioning:
Which goalie is the most fed-up with you? I’ve got to say Robin Lehner there from his time in Ottawa, he’s the only goalie who removed his blocker and started to come after me to fight…ever since then, he’s not letting me get anywhere near his blue paint (hands-up those who will pay attention the next time the Habs play Vegas to see if they can spot something there?)
If you went on a camping trip, which 3 people would you take? I assume they meant teammates so I’m gonna go with 3 of them… Pricey (Carey Price) because I’m pretty sur he spends half of his life outside, Petey (Jeff Petry) because he’s kinda calm and cool and well, Tuna (Tomas Tatar), for no other reasons that I don’t want to be the dumbest one out there (obviously laughing when he said that).
Aside from Brooklyn 99, what’s your favourite TV Show? The Office, hands down, I can watch that repeatedly and never ever get bored (I can’t say I disagree with that, his Tik Tok of Dwight was priceless)
There you have it, a nice little light-hearted blog to finish the week. I must say, it’s a great time to be a Habs fan these days, the moves made by Bergevin have made everyone very optimistic and you can just hear in Gallagher’s voice that he is over the moon to be a Hab for life.
J’avais bien hâte d’entendre cette entrevue, une des raisons étant que Knuckles est probablement le plus grand fan célèbre de Gallagher au monde (quoiqu’après avoir entendu Bergevin frôler les larmes en parlant de lui, je ne suis pas certaine que le titre ne revient pas plutôt au DG). Ce n’est pas difficile de comprendre pourquoi Nilan apprécie tant Gallagher avec la façon dont il joue avec un mélange d’habilités, de détermination et juste la bonne dose de papier sablé. Ils ont joué un bon petit montage avant de parler à Gallagher qui résumait ses 8 ans à Montréal et la première chose qu’il a dit était qu’il devait un bon souper à la personne qui l’avait fait. Plutôt drôle considérant le fait qu’il est reconnu pour être un peu radin par ses coéquipiers, tel qu’Andrew Shaw nous l’a rappelé dans les heures qui ont suivi a signature de son contrat :
Kuckles et Sean Campbell ont tous deux poses quelques question à l’assistant capitaine des Habs et il y avait quelques faits saillants à rapporter. J’ai trouvé intéressant la question lui demandant s’il avait déjà pris ça comme une insulte que plein de gens critiquent le CH en disant qu’ils étaient trop petit. Sans surprise, il s’est mis à rire et a répondu qu’il n’a jamais pris ça comme une insulte. Il est habitué d’être le plus petit joueur sur la glace et l’important c’est de remporter ses batailles, ce qu’il fait plutôt bien. Dans sa jeunesse, il était un partisan des Oilers, ce qui est logique comme il est né à Edmonton et bien que son joueur préféré était Martin St-Louis, ses Oilers préférés étaient Mike Comrie et Raffi Torres – il n’a pas pu s’empêcher de rire et d’ajouter qu’il était probablement seul qui avait Torres comme joueur préféré.
L’épisode des négociations de contrat a bien sûr été mentionné et bien qu’il ait dit qu’il n’est pas passé proche de quitter le CH, ça lui a quand même traversé l’esprit et à ce moment-là, il s’est demandé à quel point c’était important pour lui d’être un Canadien de Montréal. Il vient un temps ou tu dois te demander si tu serais confortable de ne plus revenir avec l’équipe et ça te fait vraiment réfléchir. C’était important pour lui d’être avec une équipe qui le voulait mais aussi avec une équipe compétitive et les récentes actions de Bergevin ont définitivement rendu la situation excitante.
Quand il s’est fait demander ce que le Gallagher de 28 ans dirait au Gallagher de 20 ans s’il pouvait revenir en arrière il a répondu: “Je me dirais de fermer ma gueule avec les arbitres! Ça aurait rendu ma vie tellement plus facile! Si tu veux que les arbitres te respectent, tu dois d’abord les respecter aussi. J’ai eu du trouble avec ça au début et j’en ai encore un peu des fois”. Quand on lui a demandé, il a identifié Kelly Sutherland comme le meilleur arbitre en ajoutant qu’il voit très bien le jeu et qu’il l’avait respecté dès le départ.
Campbell lui a demandé ce qui fait un bon trio et il a répondu que c’est la communication, juste le fait de parler avec tes compagnons de trio et comprendre comment tes compagnons de trio comprennent le jeu est un gros plus. Tous les joueurs ne voient pas le jeu de la même façon, mais quand tu sais comment les joueurs sur ton trio pensent, ça fait une grosse différence pour avoir une bonne ligne alors les discussions sur le banc sont vraiment importantes.
Gallagher a également mentionné qu’il trouve que les critiques à l’endroit de Bergevin au fil des ans ne sont pas justifiées. Il le trouve passionné pour la victoire et ajoute qu’il comprend comment leur vestiaire est (je n’ai pas pu m’empêcher de penser à l’échange de Subban ici) et il agit en conséquence. De plus, des fois, ça prend de la patience, il faut attendre le bon moment pour prendre les bonnes décisions et clairement, pour Bergevin, le bon moment c’est maintenant.
Ils lui ont ensuite demandé quelques questions qui avaient été textées par des fans et j’ai bien aimé les suivantes :
Quel gardien est le plus écoeuré de toi? Je dois dire Robin Lehner ici, ça remonte à quand il était à Ottawa, c’est le seul gardien qui a enlevé son bloqueur et a essayé de me frapper…depuis, il ne me laisse même pas m’approcher de son demi-cercle (levez la main ceux qui vont être attentif la prochaine fois que le CH joue contre Vegas pour voir s’il se passera quelque chose entre les deux?)
Si tu allais en camping, quelles 3 personnes amènerais-tu? Je suppose qu’il veut dire coéquipiers alors je vais prendre 3 coéquipiers… Pricey (Carey Price) parce que je suis pas mal certain qu’il passe la moitié de sa vie dehors, Petey (Jeff Petry) parce qu’il est juste toujours calme et cool et Tuna (Tomas Tatar), simplement parce que je voudrais par être le gars le plus cave su place (il riait bien sûr en disant ça)
À part Brooklyn 99, quel est ton émission de télé préférée? The Office, facilement, je peux regarder ça à répétition sans jamais me tanner (je ne peux pas dire que je ne suis pas d’accord là-dessus, en plus son imitation de Dwight sur Tik Tok était vraiment bonne).
Alors voilà, un petit blog léger pour finir la semaine. Je dois dire que c’est vraiment le bon temps pour être un partisan du CH, les dernières réalisations de Bergevin ont rendu tout le monde optimiste et ça s’entend dans la voix de Gallagher qu’il est incroyablement heureux d’être un Hab pour le reste de sa carrière..
