Quick Hits: November 9, 2020

1) When will the Flyers announce the re-signing of restricted free agent defenseman Philippe Myers? It's not a question of if the player -- who is not eligible for arbitration -- will be signed, it's a question of what the cap hit will be and the term of the deal. It would be interesting to see what comparable contracts the two sides are basing their proposals.

If the term is equivalent, I would think that Myers' eventual deal comes in south of the two-year, $3.25 million AAV contract that Travis Sanheim signed last summer as a first-time restricted free agent. Sanheim had more NHL games under his belt (141 at that point vs. 71 for Myers), for one thing. However, I don't think it will be radically different than the Sanheim bridge deal unless the two sides opt for something that would lock up Myers in a long-term contract or, at the other extreme, agree to only a one-year deal.

2) Rescheduled from June, a scaled-down version of the 2020 Flyers Alumni Golf Invitational will take place today at DuPont Country Club in Wilmington. The annual event is a crucial fundraiser for the Flyers Alumni Association, with proceeds going to Snider Hockey and other charity and community recipients.

3) A brand new Flyers Alumni website, FlyersAlumni.net ("Hit the net!) will be launched later this month. Stay tuned for more details.

4) Today in Flyers History: Nov. 9

* 1974: The second penalty shot attempt - and the first successful conversion - belonged to Flyers center Orest Kindrachuk against Washington Capitals' netminder and ex-Flyer Michel Belhumeur on this night in 1974. Kindrachuk's penalty shot tally at 10:41 of the second period gave the Flyers a 3-1 lead on their way to a 6-2 win at the Spectrum. The Flyers also dominated on special teams, striking for power play goals by Rick MacLeish, Ross Lonsberry and Tom Bladon as well as a Bill Barber shorthanded goal.

* 1985: The Flyers cruise to a 5-3 win over the Boston Bruins at the Spectrum, extending their winning streak to 10 straight games and boosting their record for the season to 12-2-0. Tim Kerr scores a hat trick and Rich Sutter tallies twice. Defending Vezina Trophy winner Pelle Lindbergh is given the night off before a four-night break in the schedule. In the wee hours of the next morning, after leaving a team party at the Coliseum practice facility in Voorhees, NJ, Lindbergh crashes his car into the steps and wall of a school building in Somerdale, NJ. He is rendered brain dead and perishes.

* 1995: Substituting on the Flyers' top line for an injured Eric Lindros, center Joel Otto breaks a scoreless deadlock in the third period and then sets up Mikael Renberg for a 2-0 lead on the way to a 3-1 Flyers home win over the Calgary Flames; Otto's first game against his longtime club. Renberg scores again to provide the insurance goal. Ron Hextall makes 19 saves to earn the victory.

* 2017: The Flyers continued their long run of regular season home success against the Chicago Blackhawks, skating to a 3-1 win at the Wells Fargo Center. First period goals by Claude Giroux and Jakub Voracek, plus an early second period tally by Sean Couturier, put the Flyers well on the way to victory. Brian Elliott made 38 saves, including 16 in the third period.

2019: First period tallies by Phil Myers and Oskar Lindblom skated the Flyers to a quick 2-0 lead but the Toronto Maple Leafs battled back to force overtime and an eventual shootout. Finally, a Claude Giroux slapshot that surprised goalie Frederik Andersen and a Sean Couturier conversion of his opportunity lifted the visiting Flyers to a 3-2 victory.

5) Nov. 9 Flyers Alumni birthday: Jason Bowen (1974).
