Beanpot canceled
For the first time in it’s 68-year history the Beanpot will not be played as it was officially canceled last week due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The news was confirmed last Monday via a tweet from TD Garden, the host of the tournament.
Hosted annually in Boston, the tournament features Harvard, Northeastern, Boston College and Boston University. The Huskies of Northeastern have won the three previous Beanpot tournaments.
When the Ivy League pulled the plug on its hockey season earlier this month, canceling Harvard’s season, the decision all but officially ended any chance of the Beanpot being played.
“It is sad. It’s certainly understandable with the decision of the Ivy League and Harvard. But the Beanpot’s a tradition, it’s a staple in the city and you want every young man to experience that Beanpot. Whether you win or not, just to be able to experience it. And for us, coming off a three-peat, we’d never done a three-peat and we’ve never done a four-peat, so you would have liked to have given it a shot,” said Northeastern head coach Jim Madigan.
“It would have been a challenge because BC and BU and Harvard are all good teams, but you would have liked to get out there and compete and test yourself to see if you could get a four-peat. It’s unfortunate, though certainly understandable. The tournament is such a big part of the fabric of Boston, so it’s just not the players, but the alumni, the administration, and the fans in the city. They’re not going to be able to experience it either this year.”
Union College cancels men’s and women’s ice hockey seasons
Union became the latest school to cancel it’s 2020-21 hockey season last week when they announced the cancelation of both their men’s and women’s ice hockey seasons.
"This was an incredibly difficult and disappointing decision that we had to make in the best interest of our entire community, a decision that I was heartbroken to deliver to our student-athletes earlier today,"
said Director of Athletics Jim McLaughlin in a statement released by the school.
"The pandemic continues to affect all aspects of our daily lives and unfortunately intercollegiate athletics, like many other extracurricular pursuits that students are passionate about on our campus, is not immune."
Union says men's and women's ice hockey players will be given another season and academic year to compete as student athletes.
Long Island University makes college hockey debut
History was made this weekend as Long Island University made its Men’s Ice Hockey debut on Thursday in a contest with Holy Cross. LIU also made history with their first win thanks to Christian Rajic's overtime winner in the contest.
"I'm kinda speechless in a sense, I'm really proud of our guys not only to get a win but the way that they did it,” said head coach Brett Riley. “Killing a penalty in OT, it was our fifth straight kill. Two-hundred days ago we didn't have a program. We never killed a penalty before as a group. We've had 15 days of practice.”
With things coming together pretty quickly for LIU, followed by the pandemic wiping out what was a tentative schedule for their inaugural season, the Sharks of LIU had to move things around in a hurry to continue with the plan of their debut season.
After much hard work LIU was able to come to an agreement with Atlantic Hockey to help fill their 24-game schedule. Despite a schedule agreement with Atlantic Hockey, the Sharks are not yet members of the conference and therefore will not be eligible for the conference’s playoffs.
Quinnipiac cancels three games after positive tests
After two members of the Quinnipiac hockey team tested positive for COIVD-19, the Bobcats were forced to cancel what would have been their season opening contest against American International University on Tuesday. Contests against Long Island and Clarkson on November 27 and 29 have also been canceled due to the positive tests.
