While the NHL is still somehow targeting a Jan. 1 start date, a return to the ice has yet to be determined. However, according to Elliotte Friedman the Bruins are one of four teams
exploring the possibility of playing outdoor home games.
Friedman goes on to reveal that the Bruins have been in talks with state and city officials about different options. Friedman goes to on mention that Fenway Park is a location he continues to hear.
A source inside the Red Sox organization tells Hockey Buzz the idea is a "pipe dream," and goes on to ask "if the Pats [New England Patriots] can’t have fans why would we/Bs?"
Fenway Park was home to the 2010 NHL Winter Classic where the Bruins defeated the Philadelphia Flyers and since, has held several NCAA and local high school hockey games as a part of their "Frozen Fenway" series.
While it's interesting to hear this is being considered, there's a lot of things that could potentially get in the way of bringing this idea to reality.
The Patriots have yet to have any fans at any of their home games to date, and Gillette Stadium announced last month that none of the remaining home games this season for both the Patriots and New England Revolution will have fans in attendance. The Red Sox just completed their brutal season without any fans in attendance.
If city officials do allow the Bruins to play games outdoors with limited fans in attendance, the Bruins would be unable to complete a full season inside baseball's oldest ballpark as the Red Sox are set to begin their 2021 home slate on April 1st, unless the Bruins ended their season with a handful of road games depending on when the puck can actually be dropped. But any potential home playoff games would either need to be played outdoors elsewhere, or back inside TD Garden.
With the Patriots unlikely to make the playoffs, and if they do, unlikely to host a playoff game, Gillette Stadium could also be an option. The home of the Patriots and Revolution held the 2016 Winter Classic, a game won by the rival Montreal Canadiens.
But with Gillette Stadium being about 45 minutes away from TD Garden, would a temporary move to Foxborough be an attractive option?
Harvard Stadium and Alumni Field--home of the Boston College Eagles could be options as well.
While it's nice to hear the Bruins and the NHL are having discussions about where home games will be played, a finalized start date to the 2020-21 season would also be nice.
