Good morning and a Happy Boxing Day to you all! Hope everyone had a great holiday, however they spent it.

A quick blog today as Ken Holland jumped on some Boxing Day deals early. Reports have confirmed that Edmonton has signed left shot defensrmen Slater Koekkoek to a one year deal with a price tag under 1 million.

Update: It is a 1 Year Deal at 850,000.

The 26 year old had 10 points in 42 games last year with the Hawks. Oilers fans will remember him begrudgingly as he played some solid shutdown D against Edmonton in the play-in round last season.

Honestly this is a great move for the Oilers. The team needed an insurance policy not only in case of injury but if youngster Caleb Jones couldn't handle top 4 minutes regularly. Koekkoek is a strong third pairing option who has some good underlying numbers. In a perfect world Koekkoek outperforms Kris Russell and takes over on the left side there.

The fact that Holland is signing players also tells me that there is a general deal in place with Ethan Bear, otherwise the team would not be spending what little cap they have left.

Enjoy your day and thanks for reading!
