Canada blew out a short-handed Germany 16-2 on Saturday but Braden Schenider is likely looking at a suspension. In another blowout, after losing 5-3 to Russia, the US rebounded with an 11-0 win over Austria. In the victory, Brett Berard had a beautiful goal while also adding a pair of assists. Hunter Skinner was scratched again while Dylan Garand dressed as the backup goalie.

Schneider's hit landed him a game misconduct and should likely earn him a game suspension. While the elbow was in and he didn't leave his feet, the principal point of contact was to the head by his shoulder. The opposing player's head was down and Schneider is a big blueliner, plus it was not predatory, but in the IIHF, those hits normally draw at least a game suspension.

Berard was one of Team USA's best players on the forecheck in the loss to Russia. His tenacious forecheck was evident and an aspect of the game lacking from the rest of the team. Berard was rewarded for his effort by lining up on the third line wing. He had a very solid first shift, showing the same energy he did Friday. Berard later made the most of his chance, notching a pretty end-to-end goal in the win over Austria:

Arizona created cap room by dealing Derek Stepan, in the final year of his deal with a $6.5 million cap hit, to Ottawa for a second-round pick. Ottawa gets closer to the floor and a veteran pivot, though one of the downside of his career. What made the deal attractive to the Senators is that Stepan only is due $2 million in salary, since cash is king in Canada's Capital or really Eugene Melnyk. Why this deal is interesting is that many of us had hoped/pushed for Brendan Smith to be dealt to Ottawa for similar reasons, as he has a $4.35 mil cap hit but only due $2.35 mil in salary. This trade likely ends any chance - if some existed - of a deal happening in the short-term.

Great skill by Vitali Kravtsov, but the reaction after is matter-of-fact, nonchalant. How about a smile of smirk, Vitali? Kravtsov has played well in the KHL and will remain there the balance of the season. Hopefully he is back in the US after that season ends.
