WJC: Day 3 Roundup, Day 4 Games
None of the three Flyers representatives at the World Junior Championships were in action on Sunday, with both Team USA (Cam York, Bobby Brink) and Team Sweden (Emil Andrae) idle. Team Sweden will look later late to extend its preliminary round winning streak to 54 games when it takes on Team Austria (coming off an 11-0 loss to Team USA on Boxing Day). Team USA returns to practice today before playing Team Czech Republic tomorrow.
Last night, the Czechs upset Russia, 2-0, behind the shut out goaltending of LA Kings prospect Lukas Parik (30 saves), a late second period goal by Filip Koffer (Prince George, WHL) and an early third period tally by former WHL forward Martin Lang.
In Sunday's earlier games, Switzerland hung tough against Finland (an eventual 4-1 win for the Finns) and Slovakia hung even tougher against Canada (who needed two goals in the third period including an empty netter, to nail down a 3-1 final). Sunday's results were a start contrast to Saturday's three blowout outcomes. The Slovaks play Germany later today.
