The Carolina Hurricanes’ training camp begins on Sunday, with a roster which features 24 forwards, 10 defensemen and four goalies. Here’s the full roster, along with some thoughts on which players we can expect to make the final roster and taxi squad.
FORWARDS (24): Sebastian Aho, Jeremy Bracco, David Cotton, Jason Cotton, Ryan Dzingel, Jesper Fast, Warren Foegele, Morgan Geekie, Seth Jarvis, Steven Lorentz, Jordan Martinook, Stelio Mattheos, Max McCormick, Brock McGinn, Martin Necas, Nino Niederreiter, Jamieson Rees, Sheldon Rempal, Drew Shore, Spencer Smallman, Jordan Staal, Andrei Svechnikov, Teuvo Teravainen, Vincent Trocheck
GOALIES (4): Antoine Bibeau, Petr Mrazek, Alex Nedeljkovic, James Reimer
In the forward group, we know 12 players who will be on the main roster, being Aho, Dzingel, Fast, Foegele, Martinook, McGinn, Necas, Niederreiter, Staal, Svechnikov, Teravainen and Trocheck. I’d also say there’s a good chance Morgan Geekie could make the roster, considering he was a regular member of the lineup for the 2020 playoffs. Seth Jarvis could impress in camp but the Hurricanes’ forward group is crowded as it is and it’s unlikely he makes the team. Along with Jarvis, players who could be considered long shots to make the roster are David and Jason Cotton, Stelio Mattheos, Jamieson Rees, Sheldon Rempal and Spencer Smallman. This leaves Jeremy Bracco, Steven Lorentz, Max McCormick and Drew Shore to compete for a spot as a spare on the roster or to be part of the taxi squad.
Moving to the blue line, there were only 10 defensemen invited to participate in Carolina’s training camp– and for good reason. The Hurricanes already have an abundance of NHL-caliber defensemen and don’t really need a larger crowd at camp. We already know Fleury, Gardiner, Hamilton, Pesce, Skjei and Slavin will be on the roster. The Hurricanes will need spares and members of the taxi squad as well and the only player of the 10 listed who I’d say is a pretty safe bet to head to the AHL would be Joey Keane. Perhaps the Hurricanes would return Bean to the AHL as well, rather than sitting him in the press box but I’d say Ryan is a likely spare for the team, while Forsling could be on the taxi squad.
In net, the Hurricanes will roll with a tandem of Petr Mrazek and James Reimer once again. We can also probably bet on Alex Nedeljkovic being Carolina’s taxi squad goaltender, over Antoine Bibeau.
