Marcus Foligno has been resigned to a new 3-year extension that will kick in next season. Foligno was due to become an UFA at the end of the season.

The new deal is for $9.3M over three years ($3.1M AAV).

Foligno has been a big part of the Wild depth since coming over from Buffalo, in the trade that sent Jason Pominville and Marco Scandella to the Sabres back in June of 2017. Tyler Ennis was also part of that trade coming to the Wild. Pominville has since retired and Scandella has since been dealt by the Sabres, and Ennis was bought out of the final year of his contract following the 2018 season, leaving Foligno as the lone piece of the deal left with either team.

There was some rumbling in the off-season that Foligno could be the next Wild captain as he commands the respect of the room and his mates. Not sure how his contract status played into the decision to wait to extend Foligno, but on the surface I gotta believe it played some role for sure.

Either way Foligno is a key role player bringing some offensive punch to go along with his rugged work in the corners and the hits department.
