I have handicapped the NHL, NFL and US College Football for over 15 years and I hope to bring a wealth of knowledge, angles and information to all of you as we place wagers each night in the NHL!

I will be betting based on units per play. This means, if I bet 1 Unit of my bankroll, it means I bet $100 on that particular game. Each unit represents $100. Every bettor out there has a different amount per unit so please bet what you are able to afford. Some bettors have $10 representing a unit and so on.

With the NHL season being completely different this year, I will tread lightly at times until I get had a handle on different teams. To start the season I will be strictly betting sides and tracking the over/unders for the first little while. For instance, an angle I have followed for years is betting the total under on visiting teams that are playing road games on back to back nights. With all this inter-division play we will see the same two teams playing each other on back to back nights in the same rink, meaning it wipes out the travel aspect which made teams in the past play a more defensive type of game on the back end of the back to back road games due to fatigue.

Today I will be focusing on future bets in the NHL with the real games starting tomorrow night.
Stanley Cup future bet leans.

Philadelphia(+1700)
I am looking for the Flyers to build off their playoff momentum from the bubble. Can Carter Hart continue to progress to Elite status as one of the NHL’s best goaltenders year in and year out?

Toronto(+1100)
The Leafs are built to win now and this is a team that will benefit from a shorter season. Sheldon Keefe having a full season with this crew, will be able to officially put his mark on this team.

Washington(+2000)
New coach, new starting goalie tandem, nice additions on the blueline. This teams window to win another Cup is NOW!

Colorado(+600)
The Avs are definitely on the rise and if healthy this team should easily contend after losing in 7 games to Dallas in the bubble. With many rising starts having another year under their belt, couple that with the disappointment of their early playoff exit, this will be a motivated bunch.

Vegas(+900)
This team is built to win now like the Leafs. Losing in the Conference Finals in the bubble to Dallas, many players seemed to think they took the Starts too lightly. Adding Pietrangelo on the blueline and having one of the best goaltending duos for a full season, should prove to hopefully push the Knights back to the Stanley Cup Final for the 2nd time in franchise history.

There are some nice odds out there when betting on divisional winners. I would say go with the same teams that I have as Stanley Cup future bets to win their divisions. On a sidenote, Carolina(+400) to win the Central Division is great value.

As for tonight’s matches..

I always start the season out slow, trying to get a feel for teams. The last thing any bettor wants to do is get too aggressive in the early going, then start chasing their losses. Sadly before they know it, they have blown their season bankroll because they weren’t patient. Like they say, the season is a marathon, not a sprint!

Here are my plays for Wednesday(all my ML plays are based on the final outcome of the game, not in regulation only)

Toronto – ML(-139) for 2 Units – I like the Leafs that much on opening night. This is a team that wants to come out of the gate on fire with Sheldon Keefe finally having the opportunity to install the system he feels will make this team consistently successful. Montreal definitely upgraded in the off-season but I feel it will take a little time for them to come together. The Leafs players know their Stanley Cup is now!

Flyers –ML(-119) for 1 Unit – I personally think the Pens are going to have grind it out just to make the playoffs this year. Whereas, the Flyers are a team that will contend to not only win their division but make a deep run in the playoffs. Nothing like playing your hated rival on opening night at home. Tempted to play the Flyers for 2 Units, but I will be patient and pick my spots as the season goes.

Avs – ML(-150) for ½ Unit – Not thrilled with the high juice so I will go lightly on this game even though I have the Avs as a Stanley Cup contender this year. It will be interesting to see how the Blues adapt on the blueline without their captain. I would like to see the Avs make a statement here on opening night.
