The Anaheim Ducks lost their season opener to the Vegas Golden Knights last night, by a score of 5-2.
It was a wild start to the game, with four goals scored in the first eight minutes, but things did settle down a bit after that.
Defensively, the Ducks had a pretty disastrous night. There were turnovers all over the ice, as well as miscommunications between just about every defender on the team and everyone was getting caught out of position. John Gibson didn’t have his best night but he did bail out the Ducks with some great saves as well. He was inconsistent but if it weren’t for him, the score could’ve been worse.
That said, it was promising to see the Ducks’ forward group getting some really good chances. Max Comtois was obviously the story with his two goals but Derek Grant worked really well alongside Nicolas Deslauriers and Carter Rowney on the fourth line and the trio were generating some good opportunities.
The key is that the Ducks will have to be far better defensively going forward. It might not matter how good John Gibson is if he’s going to face as many odd-man rushes as he did against Vegas last night.
Overall, it was a pretty sloppy performance from Anaheim. There were some positives but they’re not going to win many games playing the way they did in game one.
