Hutton is 27 years old and attended Anaheim’s training camp on a professional tryout, after spending the 2019-20 season with the Los Angeles Kings. He scored four goals and 16 points in 65 games with the Kings, to go along with a plus-five rating. Hutton averaged 18:16 per game last year but also played against the second-highest quality of competition of any defenseman on the team, according to Hockey Abstract.
The signing comes after Christian Djoos was claimed off waivers by the Detroit Red Wings and Brendan Guhle was placed on long-term injured reserve to start the season. Hutton joins a crowded defense group, which will feature several players fighting for ice time. Regardless, Hutton’s deal essentially comes with no risk, based on the term and price, and the potential to provide great value for the Ducks.
